Two tiles that look alike can cost very differently. Before you compare price lists, it helps to know what you are paying for. Here are the factors that decide the price of tiles in Chennai.
1. Type of tile
- Ceramic: usually the most budget-friendly; best for walls.
- Vitrified (GVT/PGVT): the most common choice for Chennai floors; mid-range.
- Full-body vitrified and porcelain: colour runs through the tile, so chips show less; costs more.
- Large slabs and imported tiles: the premium end.
2. Indian or imported
Indian brands give great value and wide choice. Italian and Spanish tiles cost more because of design, finish quality, import duty and freight. See our Italian vs Indian tiles guide.
3. Size
Bigger tiles usually cost more per sq ft, and slabs also need skilled fixing. But they have fewer joints and look more premium. See the tile size guide.
4. Finish and design
Matt, glossy, textured, sugar or carving finishes, and special effects like book-match marble, all change the price.
5. Hidden costs people forget
- Wastage: add about 10% extra for cutting and breakage (more for diagonal or herringbone layouts).
- Adhesive and grout: large tiles need good tile adhesive, not just cement.
- Labour: slabs and imported tiles need experienced fixers.
- Skirting and steps: remember to count these too.
